2. Symbolism. Retention values

The solutes, introduced into the carrier gas stream, are retained by the material contained in the column (see § 4 ). An equilibrium, or pseudo-equilibrium, is established between the concentration of solute molecules in the fixed phase and the concentration of molecules of the same solute in the gas phase, or mobile phase, the ratio of the two being called the partition coefficient K.
