8. Sample preparation

Gas chromatography is mainly used in organic chemistry, as inorganic products are relatively non-volatile. However, some can be analyzed after being quantitatively transformed into volatile compounds. For example, uranium can be chromatographed in the form of its hexafluoride.

In organic chemistry, it is often necessary to prepare the sample to be introduced into the chromatograph so that it is in an easily injectable form, yet still representative of the product to be analyzed. Depending on the case, the methods described briefly below may be used.

8.1 Methods without chemical transformation

  • Dissolution: if the product to be analyzed is solid or not very volatile, it is useful to inject it in the form of a solution....
