2. Transfer problem

The transfer problem consists in finding the trajectory with minimum consumption between two pieces of debris. This optimal control problem is difficult in the general case. To simplify it, we define a transfer strategy adapted to the specificities of the orbits and the vehicle's propulsion system. The optimal control problem is thus reduced to a small optimization problem that can be solved efficiently.

2.1 Transfer strategy

Simplifications are based on the specific features of the mission:

  • the orbits of the debris are almost circular, since most of the debris comes from former observation satellites in circular orbits;

  • the targeted removal rate (5 debris per year) leaves enough...
