American engineer and physicist R. H. Goddard invented the liquid rocket motor. After a successful first flight in 1926, Goddard set about tuning the engine to achieve the highest possible altitude with a rocket of a given mass. . This third problem (discussed in ) is to find the optimum thrust law for the Goddard problem, taking atmospheric braking into account.
