2.1 Assembling cylindrical parts

The assembly of cylindrical parts is a field of choice for bonding, since adhesives are highly resistant to shear and therefore also to torque, in which case stresses are distributed over a large surface area. We've seen one application of this with anaerobic adhesives for locking threads, but press-fitted parts can also be smooth: pinions and wheels on their axles, where keying or heat shrinking is eliminated, tube and pipe assemblies, fixing a tapered shank to a drill bit or screwdriver tip, bronze bearings or bushings, tool handles, etc.

We can also assemble and seal tubes and pipes: for example, city gas pipes have been successfully bonded by Gaz de France (GDF), and have held up perfectly for 30 years.
