2. Railway constraints and requirements
Until the early 2010s, obsolescence management requirements and constraints were not formalized. This wasn't to say that manufacturers and operators weren't concerned about obsolescence and maintenance, but the methods and processes employed varied from one company to another. Few customer/supplier requirements existed, and only electronic components were managed by obsolescence management processes following the recommendations issued by the JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) in the standards J-STD-046 (J-STD-046 of July 2016 – Customer Notification Standard for Product/Process Changes by Electronic Product Suppliers) and J-STD-048 (J-STD-048 of November 2014 – Notification Standard for Product Discontinuance).
