4. AC voltage adaptation: transformer

4.1 Transformers and chokes

Under single-phase catenary, the transformer lowers the voltage – 25 kV (50 or 60 Hz) or 15 kV (16.7 Hz) – to a level suitable for traction motor operation: from 1,500 to 2,000 V.

We won't go into its well-known principle [D 3 050] , but in rail traction, the transformer poses a twofold problem of dimensions and mass. As it is practically impossible to give it the same characteristics, all other things being equal, as an industrial or power station...
