7. Electric drive
From the outset, the principle of track guidance has been associated with the principle of "electric guidance", which involves distributing power along the entire line. Based on the use of electric motors, this system requires a complex infrastructure for powering the traction units: connection to the distribution network and line distribution.
7.1 Traction power supply systems
The first applications of electric traction motors were in urban transport, where power and speed were modest. The DC motor with series excitation commutator was universally used, as it offered the effort – speed characteristic best suited to traction requirements:
