7. CBTC for the main lines
CBTC systems have been developed for urban applications. The aim of this section is to compare CBTC systems with the control systems proposed for main lines.
7.1 ERTMS
The question is whether ERTMS can be considered as a CBTC and whether ERTMS could be used in urban transport systems. For a description of ERTMS, see "Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI)" on the website of the European Railway Agency (ERA).
ERTMS level 1 cannot be considered as a CBTC because there is no continuous transmission between the infrastructure and the mobiles.
