7. Pasta (suspensions)
7.1 Definition
Pastes are semi-solid preparations for cutaneous application containing high proportions of finely or very finely divided solids (2.9.35), dispersed in the base within the base (up to 50%, or even higher). Pastes and ointments can be hydrophobic or hydrophilic, depending on the base used, which is often hydrophobic except in the case of water-based pastes.
