Microbiological control techniques used in the pharmaceutical industry are standardized by Pharmacopoeias. They often have a relatively long response time and are difficult to automate. Other industries, such as food and cosmetics, have already benefited from alternative techniques. Subject to validation, some of these techniques could be adapted to the pharmaceutical field, either for European Pharmacopoeia protocols (initial contamination, water studies, preservative efficacy testing, antibiotic dosage, etc.), or for "in-process" controls, enabling corrective measures to be taken in good time.
