8. Conclusion
In this article, we provide an overview of the various issues involved in medical image registration. A method is characterized by the attributes used to guide the registration, a similarity criterion, a deformation model and an optimization strategy. Different choices are possible for each of these elements, resulting in a very large number of different registration methods.
More and more methods are available on the Internet (see "Find out more"). Choosing which of these methods is best suited to a given problem is not always easy. It's important to bear in mind that using a recalibration method as a simple "black box" in a processing chain can prove perilous, and the simple substitution of one recalibration method for another can sometimes have significant consequences for the final result of the processing chain in question.
