2. Pulp manufacturing processes

There are two main types of pulp production process: mechanical and chemical, distinguished by the technologies used and the fibers produced. While the latter are essentially based on dissolving lignin and extracting it from the fiber walls to obtain fibers that are only slightly degraded, long, flexible and made up solely of polysaccharides, the former are designed to separate fibers mechanically without excessive loss of material.

They can be classified according to their performance:

  • over 90% efficiency: mechanical pulps from defibers or grinders, thermomechanical pulps (TMP) and chemical-thermomechanical pulps (CTMP);

  • yield between 80 and 90%: chemomechanical pulp (CMP) ;

  • yield between 70 and 80%: semi-chemical...
