4. Sharp edge wear

Tool wear is an inescapable phenomenon, resulting in a slow change in the shape of its cutting edges.

The speed at which the process evolves varies according to the materials (tool and part) and working conditions.

4.1 Wear origins

For a long time, this degradation was considered to be caused solely by abrasion due to the friction of wood, which behaves rather like a grinding wheel. Today, we know that this mechanical wear is not the only cause; it may even be weakened by other forms of wear, such as electrical or chemical.
