3. Mechanisms of water damage to glass
The main mechanisms involved in water damage to glass are interdiffusion, hydrolysis of the glass network and the formation of a weathering layer.
Depending on the conditions of alteration, some of these mechanisms may or may not be favored over others.

shows the processes controlling weathering kinetics; these occur in series or in parallel and are closely coupled. The blue blocks represent the processes governing the selective release of ions, while the yellow blocks represent the glass matrix alteration mechanisms
