7.1 Weathering layer

In both old and model glass (exposed to rain or sheltered), a layer of hydrated, dealkalized glass is observed beneath the surface of the glass. This subsurface layer of alteration (CA) can be seen with the naked eye by the appearance of iridescence on model glasses as early as 15 days after exposure to precipitation .
