Enormous progress has been made over the last twenty years in the manufacture of organic thin films, both in the quality of their structure and in the control of their optical and electronic properties. This has enabled us to gain detailed knowledge of the microscopic properties of these layers and their interfaces. These advances, together with our growing knowledge of the properties of semi-conducting conjugated polymers, have led to a boom in organic optoelectronics, and in particular to the extraordinary development of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs).
