Availability and characteristics of agro-resources
Barely 40% of the total land cover is used as agricultural land. More than two-thirds of this agricultural surface is used for grazing. The remaining 30% is used mainly to produce agro-resources for animal and human consumption.
Less than 2% of agricultural land is used for non-food purposes (biomaterials and bioenergy).
The potential for agro-resource production is therefore enormous, and bioplastics account for less than 0.05% of arable land use worldwide (figure
