3. Bond energy: the mechanical strength of the interface

Once the bonding energy has propagated, the two surfaces are joined together. With the exception of very special direct bonds (gold/gold, SAB, ADB, etc.), the two surfaces can always be disassembled.

In general, the debonding of the two materials is measured using the fracture energy GC . It has the unit of an energy and is generally expressed in J · m –2 . It is also sometimes referred to as the critical energy restitution rate. In the case of bonded assemblies, the term adhesion energy is used.
