The origin of adhesive tape and cellulose tape (Richard Drew 1925)

The word "scotch" originated in the United States in the 1920s. The world of automobiles was booming at the time, and so was that of cocked cars. At the time, bodybuilders were using newspaper for masking operations, but not without difficulty, as this solution was unreliable:

  • glue transfer to bodywork ;

  • paint transfer to the bodywork because the substrate is not watertight;

  • the substrate tears and the printed ink is printed on the vehicle.

The 3M company then marketed a masking tape for paint, in addition to sandpaper, which has the particularity of being coated with glue only on the edges and not on its entire surface.
