Greenwood and Williamson's model , detailed in one of the most famous papers in the field of tribology, was proposed almost 50 years ago. It now counts nearly five thousand citations and has been the source of several hundred articles describing possible extensions or even complements to this original work.
Despite these numerous refinements, it's important to emphasize the soundness of the initial choices made, as the assumptions of this model, with very few exceptions, have proved to be relevant as experimental validations or more refined theoretical calculations have progressed....
