2. Silicon alkoxide/transition metal alkoxide reactivity

Transition metal alkoxides (Ti, Zr, Al...) are much more reactive than silicon alkoxides to nucleophilic attack and thus, in particular, to hydrolysis and condensation reactions, due to :

  • the more electropositive nature of transition metals compared with that of the silicon atom;

  • the possibility of expanding the coordination sphere of metal alkoxides, unlike silicon alkoxides (table 1 ).
