6.1 Open coating defects

Open defects mean deterioration in the coating leading to exposure of the steel of the pipeline to its environment. These are for the most part due to mechanical damage: either when the structure is laid, or when the structure is in operation, particularly when work is being carried out in the vicinity by a third party. The most frequent damage is as follows :

  • poor choice of backfill material: particle size too great, stone too hard (silex), crushing at the bottom of the trench;
