5. Corrosion mechanisms
In recent years, a great deal of work has been carried out to determine the corrosion mechanisms of multi-century archaeological iron systems. These studies have been based on the characterization of corrosion facies as described above, but also on specific tests on objects of little museum value, sacrificed for detailed corrosion studies (nails, sheet metal fragments, etc.).
