2. How corrosion inhibitors work

There is no single mode of action for corrosion inhibitors. In fact, the mechanism of action of a given compound often depends on the corrosion system (metal + solution) in which it is found. First, we'll set out a few general points about inhibitor behavior, backed up by a few specific examples. Then, we'll take a closer look at the major classes of inhibitors.

2.1 General

Whatever the exact mechanism by which each inhibitor acts under the conditions in which it is placed, there are a number of basic considerations valid for all inhibitors:
