8. Commercial applications

Tantalum and niobium are considered biocompatible, non-toxic materials, which is why they are used in the medical field.

8.1 Niobium applications

Steelmaking is niobium's main application:

  • microalloyed steels 82

  • stainless steels 10

  • 6% superalloys

  • miscellaneous 2

Worldwide consumption is around 40,000 tonnes of Nb content, compared with 20,000 tonnes in 1997.
