6. Arc furnace and peripherals
An internationally accepted method of comparing arc furnaces is to consider their specific power, i.e. the ratio of the transformer's rated power (expressed in kVA) to the cast mass (in tons).
With this in mind, the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) proposes the following classification:
medium-power furnaces: up to 399 kVA/t ;
high-power furnaces: from 400 to 699 kVA/t ;
very high-power furnaces: 700 kVA/t and above.
