1. History

Essentially three processes for continuous casting of thin slabs have been explored and/or developed. The first two, mentioned for the record, have not yet been applied industrially.

1.1 Casting between strips

The machine most representative of this type of casting is the Hazelett, developed in the USA in the 45s and 50s and successfully used for non-ferrous metals.

Figure 1 shows a schematic cross-section of the machine. The long sides of the ingot mould consist of two thin, closed steel strips, rotating in opposite directions and supported by drive cylinders. The distance between the inner faces of the two strips corresponds to the thickness...
