2. Reinforcement methods associated with thermochemical treatments

The aim is to improve surface mechanical properties in terms of wear and fatigue resistance.

Two main effects are assessed:

  • hardness level ;

  • the residual stress ratio in compression.

2.1 Hardening of metal alloys in thermochemical treatments

The intervention of one (or more) reactive element(s) during thermochemical treatment leads to chemical modifications of the surface resulting from different mechanisms.
