Prepainted sheet steel consists of two basic elements:
support metal ;
the paint system.
1.1 Support steels
The base metal is selected according to the following criteria:
processing: bending, profiling, stamping, etc. ;
exposure: indoors, outdoors, aggressive environments, humidity... ;
functionality: the need for precise mechanical characteristics, non-ageing, fatigue resistance, resistance to high or low temperatures, etc.

In 2006, the global prepainted sheet market was estimated at 18.4 million tonnes, up 6.7% on 2005 (figure ). This market is divided between Europe (ECCA), North America (NCCA) and the rest of the world (ROW) (figure ).
