3. Predicting and controlling structural conditions through heat treatment

As thermodynamic data often correspond to processes that are too slow for solid-phase diffusion in industrial cycles, we have seen that it is often necessary to use transformation or precipitation diagrams drawn up for cycles close to those that can be envisaged for parts.

3.1 Using prediction diagrams

  • Isothermal transformation or precipitation diagrams, as well as continuous cooling diagrams, are widely used to predict structures and hardnesses during typical cycles, including passage through another phase or prior solution, and during cooling cycles.
