4. Safety recommendations for gas applications

The physical and chemical properties of gases used as heat treatment atmospheres call for special precautions to ensure their safe use.

This section presents the main risks, with a few definitions. It proposes recommendations for the prevention of anoxia, as well as the use of toxic gases and flammable atmospheres. Finally, it summarizes a number of recommendations concerning the use of gases in thermal equipment, as exhaustively detailed in European standard NF EN 746.3 [32] .

The application and use of gases must be studied rigorously for each specific application, in conjunction with the industrialists concerned, equipment manufacturers and/or industrial gas suppliers.
