ABSTRACT

Ecocert, a certification body creating innovative standards, has acquired a unique skill set enabling it to develop standards with extremely rigorous environmental criteria (cleaning products, home perfumes, cosmetics…).Ecocert is now launching a new standard dedicated to paints and coating products from natural origin. As the market is growing, this new label is launched in order to help consumers to distinguish a genuine ecological product from those belonging more to the « green washing » field.

 INTRODUCTION

Today, it's indisputable that demand for "natural" products is growing, and this is true of all consumer product ranges. Paints are no exception to the rule.

The shelves of DIY superstores and many Internet sites are overflowing with a growing number of paint brands claiming to be "natural" or "ecological", but the related claims - "organic paint", "water-based paint", "solvent-free paint", "natural paint" - are sometimes misleading and offer no real guarantee or clear information on the product's formulation.

Indeed, the use of some of these terms, although regulated, is sometimes abused: the term organic, for example, should be reserved for agricultural products (European regulation no. 834/2007). ). Similarly, according to CNC notices , the term natural should only be used for a product that has undergone little processing, close to its natural state... and a product should only be described as natural if it contains at least 95% natural components.

Unfortunately in this context, the presence of numerous ecological labels (ecolabels, NF environnement standards, private charters...) sometimes adds to the confusion.
