7. Conclusion

In 2012, worldwide production of vermicular graphite castings was in the region of 90,000 to 100,000 t. The most numerous applications are in land transport (96% of production tonnage).

In order of magnitude, these 100,000 t represent 2% and 4% respectively of the tonnages of grey and GS cast irons used in the automotive sector in 2012.

Today, the global situation is, to a first approximation, as follows:

  • in diesel engines :

    • passenger cars + commercial vehicles excluding trucks and buses: 25 M vehicles – Share of vermicular graphite cast iron today: 1.0 to 1.3 M, i.e. around 4 to 5%,

    • trucks and buses: 4 M vehicles – Share of vermicular graphite cast iron today: 0.4 to 0.5 M, i.e. around 10 to 15%;
