6. Conclusion

While foundry tomography is widely used for R&D purposes in research centers, universities and major OEMs (automotive, aerospace), it is still relatively uncommon in industrial environments, where more traditional non-destructive testing methods (radioscopy) are still preferred. The obstacles to the penetration of tomography in foundries are both economic and technical. Indeed, the acquisition cost of a tomograph is considerable, and is added to that of radioscopy equipment, which is still often indispensable. What's more, calculation times (acquisition, reconstruction and analysis) are still long, limiting the productivity of tomographs. However, the range of tomography equipment on offer is constantly evolving, driven by advances in medical tomography and increasingly powerful processors, enabling ever shorter calculation times (just a few minutes).
