5. Cold processing

After annealing, shot-blasting and pickling, to obtain a softened alloy free of surface oxides, the product can be cold-worked (at room temperature) by rolling, drawing or stretching.

5.1 Cold rolling

It is generally performed on Sendzimir-type reversing multiroll mills. The rolling stand is made up of some twenty rolls, and the two small-diameter work rolls (around 10 cm), used for rolling, are supported by rolls of increasing diameter. Two coilers are positioned on either side of the stand to ensure the strip's tension and counter-tension. Rolling takes place under a film of mineral oil to facilitate metal flow, eliminate the heat generated by rolling, and lubricate the rolling stand's internal equipment.
