5. Conclusion

The main problem to be solved remains the elimination of surface spalling of the tread (figures 16 and 17 ), which occurs on heavily loaded tracks. These spalls can damage the wheels and become plunging fatigue cracks, leading to ultimate brittle fracture of the rail, with all the attendant risks.
