
1. Steels for mass treatment
1.1 European basic standards
Steels for through-hardening are described in standard NF EN 10083, which is subdivided into three parts:
NF EN 10083-1: "Steels for quenching and tempering - special steels" ;
NF EN 10083-2: "Steels for quenching and tempering-quality steels";
NF EN 10083-3: "Steels for quenching and tempering-boron steels".
It should be pointed out straight away that the content of part 2 of standard NF EN 10083: "Steels for quenching and tempering – quality steels" will not be discussed here, since this part of the standard specifies that quality steels are distinguished from special steels...
