2. Numeric designation

The numerical designation of a steel makes it possible to assign a characteristic number to each steel grade. At present, this number has 5 digits, but in the future it may have 7. Table 7 describes the meaning of the various digits.

The steel group number is made up of two digits, the first of which refers to the various types of steel detailed in table 8 , while the second corresponds to the various subtypes of grades specific to each type; the meaning of this second digit is explained, for each type of steel, in tables 9 to 17 .
