 INTRODUCTION

Summary

Materials and the devices created by their combination are heterogeneous at different scales, whether intentionally or unintentionally, and this influences or even determines many properties. Raman imaging, by combining submicron optical spatial resolution with the subnanometric information that can be extracted from spectra, provides information that other imaging techniques cannot, thanks to its specific probe, the chemical bond.

Abstract

Material and multi-material devices are heterogeneous at various scales. The heterogeneity that determines significantly material properties, results from the synthesis process and/or from a design, intentionally or not. Raman mapping combines the sub-micron optical spatial resolution with the sub-nanometre information available from Raman spectrum-modelling. This offers important information, not given by other imaging techniques because of the very specific character of the Raman probe, the chemical bond it-self.
