4. Processing properties of cast aluminium alloys

4.1 Foundry properties

This field is almost as vast and complex as that of structures and mechanical properties. Table 7 gives a classification of the castability of alloys, based essentially on fluidity (or castability), non-crackability and tightness (an aspect of shrinkage behavior). Alloys containing 7 to 13% silicon are generally those with the best casting properties. The casting properties of the main alloy families are described in greater detail in the article [M 810 A] .
