1. Microelectronics emblematic of cutting-edge technologies
The term "microelectronics" covers the production (and design) of integrated circuits (generally produced on a semiconductor substrate, today mainly silicon) enabling the creation of electronic automata with a wide range of applications (PCs, cell phones, digital TV, automobiles, industrial computing, robotics, mechanics, etc.) and which today, thanks to ever-increasing computing power, can be used to produce artificial intelligence.
This area has acquired the reputation of being, par excellence, the domain of cutting-edge technologies, those that have made the "information civilization" possible. The mythical Silicon Valley is emblematic of this public perception. The microelectronics sector has been characterized by significant progress and rapid growth since the invention of the microchip in 1947.
