In the medical field, metal foams are mainly used because their structure is similar to that of bone. As a result, only foams with an open structure are concerned, and the constituent material used must be highly biocompatible. Lastly, the metal foam used must have mechanical characteristics close to those of bone, to ensure satisfactory behavior when subjected to heavy loads on the repaired bone.

6.1 Contribution of metal foams

Because of its frequent use in the medical field, titanium is the most widely used material for the manufacture of these foams.
