Foam is generally used in conjunction with a more rigid support to create a sandwich structure with outstanding bending properties, thanks to the increased modulus of the element subjected to bending.

3.1 Foam design

The mechanical properties of the panels obviously depend on the materials of which they are made, firstly the metal foam core, and secondly the two outer sheets.

The most common sandwich core material is closed-pore aluminum foam, usually produced by a foaming process. The outer sheets are also often made of aluminum alloy, but can also be made of steel.
