The first two examples of PHC host matrices were presented by Wong's group in 2005. . PHC1 and PHC2 (figure 3 ) are both matrices based on fluorene dimers (bridged biphenyl) and/or 9,9′-spirobifluorene (9,9′-SBF). In these two matrices, the π-conjugation extends over a fluorene dimer (linked in the 2 and 2′ positions), resulting in a similar triplet state energy level for both matrices and low in energy (E T = 2.28 eV for PHC1 and PHC2).
