7. Conclusion and outlook
Semiconductor laser technologies have reached a very high level of technological maturity. This has made it possible to develop high-performance optical transmission systems for telecoms networks. The development of semiconductor lasers for telecoms applications will follow several directions. Firstly, the development of new materials such as quantum dots should continue, with the aim of obtaining lasers with higher performance in terms of temperature resistance, modulation bandwidth and chirp. Secondly, new semiconductor laser structures will be studied to extend wavelength tunability and make them easier to control.
The integration of lasers into increasingly dense PICs is also a major focus of future development. PICs will make it possible to drastically reduce costs and power consumption, paving the way for new network architectures. They are also essential...
