5. Glossary

polariton

Quasiparticle resulting from the coupling of an electromagnetic wave and an electrical polarization.

surface plasmon-polariton (or surface plasmon for short)

Polariton whose electrical polarization is generated by the displacement of free electrons on the surface of a metal.

supermode

Hybrid mode resulting from the coupling of two modes (coupled mode theory). Two coupled modes generate an even supermode and an odd supermode.

LSPR (Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance): localized surface plasmon resonance

Detection technique consisting of measuring the spectral shift of localized plasmon resonances as a function of environmental change (due to the presence of entities to be detected).
