4. Classification of diffraction gratings

Reflection grating, transmission grating, holographic grating, volume holographic grating... There are a multitude of names for the various types of diffraction grating that exist. These names refer to the nature of the modulation (volume grating or surface grating), their configuration of use (transmission or reflection operation), or even their manufacturing process (etched grating, holographic grating, replicated grating, master grating...). None of these classifications unequivocally covers all existing network families. We adopt the classification proposed by Loewen and Popov as the most relevant.
