Before grafting the desired substrate onto a solid support, it is often advisable to introduce a spacer arm and/or a linker as shown in figure :
Indeed, if the active site is grafted directly onto the polymer backbone, its accessibility and therefore its reactivity may be reduced by the steric hindrance generated by the matrix.
