INTRODUCTION
Determining atmospheric pressure using a mercury barometer requires a number of corrections to take account, as we shall see later, of various influencing factors (temperature, acceleration of gravity, etc.). In the past, when precise means of calculation were not readily available, tables were used to interpolate the values of these various corrections.
Nowadays, it seems simpler - and this is the aim of this article - to determine the value of atmospheric pressure directly from the readings taken on a mercury barometer, according to the various environmental parameters. Calculators are now available which allow you to obtain the result easily and accurately.
